Sixteen Waveney Valley A.C. members took part in the third and final race in this years Bungay Summer 10k series on a very warm, breezy mid-week evening. Peter Rogers was first to finish for Waveney, in 12th place in 39:59. Lloyd Scriven finished 18th in 40:50 and Billy Underdown, who has had a busy summer of races, was 28th in 43:22.
Bob Milner finished 37th in 44:22, Bill Kingaby 49th in 46:16 and Alan Richardson 73rd in 50:03, again winning the trophy for first in his M70+ age category. On Sunday, Mark Smith competed in the Fort William Marathon, the sixth of ten marathons he is taking part in this year in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. The tough race is set in the heart of the Scottish Highlands in the shadow of Ben Nevis and just under 400 competitors completed the race. Torrential rain gave the 26.2 miles an added difficulty. Mark finished the race in 262nd place in a time of 4.56:15.
On Friday July 28, the Worstead 5-mile event took place, which is part of the Worstead weekend festival. The race was number eight (of ten) in this years Leathes Prior Norfolk Grand Prix series. There were well over 400 runners taking part with two from Waveney Valley. Mike Quantrill finished 118th in 35:19 and Stuart Smith, who rarely misses this annual event, in 312th in 44:15.
