Good Friday saw athletes from Waveney Valley AC, Bungay Black Dog RC, Gt Yarmouth & District AC and Framlingham Flyers take part in Round 1 of the inaugural Inter-Club Tournament between the 4 clubs. The tournament was designed to provide more competition for Junior athletes from 8 to 17, across the 4 disciplines of a road race, track & field, x country and sportshall. Bungay hosted and organised round 1 which took place on Gorleston sea-front on a blustery and wet Good Friday morning.
Undeterred by the weather, 84 young athletes, including 23 from Waveney, raced up and down the seafront, cheered on by parents and people out for a morning stroll. The U11s raced over a 2k course with the girls and boys setting off 10 minutes apart. The winning girl was Tilly Aldis from Fram Flyers in 9.42, with Abeni Beckham the 1st Waveney girl finishing 5th in 11.44 followed by Brooke Oram 11th 11.44, Libby Mayall 13th 11.52, Maisie Elvin-Andrews 17th 13.13, Maddie Archbold 19th 14.32 and Amy Catchpole 20th in 14.40 in her first outing in a Waveney vest. The winning boy also from Framlingham was Alec Mackay in a time of 9.06, with Joel Burgess the first Waveney boy home in 5th place clocking 10.10, followed by Benjamin Cone 6th 10.12, Leo Joscelyne 8th 10.18, Finn Howes 9th 10.19, Oscar Taylor 13th 11.12, Daniel Goldspink 14th 11.29, Pierre Stohr 16th 11.56 and Vaughan Beckham 20th in 12.23.
The U13s raced over a 3.2k course and all set off together. The winning girl from GYDAC was Molly Bean in a time of 16.09 with Harriet Lyman coming 4th for Waveney in a time of 16.49 and Mia 10th in 18.43. Waveney claimed 1st and 2nd in the boys race with Jamie Besford 1st home in 14.10 followed by Tai Elvin-Andrews in 14.28. Callum was 8th in 16.15 followed by Harry Bernasconi in 16.45 with Sam Stevens 11th in 17.19.
The U15s and U17s raced over the full 5k parkrun course, with Lauren Oram winning the girls race for Waveney in a time of 26.47, with the boys race won by Samuel Grooms from Fram in 20.00 with Lewis Covill finishing 10th for Waveney in 34.51. Round 2 will be hosted by GYDAC on 11 May on the Wellesley Track in Gt Yarmouth.
